Description

One of my first ever bronzes, sculpted back in 1993, was a robin – “Robin I”. It sold out well over 20 years ago, but I wanted to revisit both the subject and the concept/pose with this new sculpt, “Robin III”.

The European Robin is officially the most loved bird in Britain – everyone knows what a robin looks like, with its gorgeous red breast and tuneful song.

On mainland Europe these are shy birds, often heard, but seldom seen, but in Britain they are fearless. In fact positively sociable, because they have been encouraged and regarded with affection by generations of Brits, stretching back hundreds, if not thousands, of years. Many a gardener will turn around to find a robin only inches away, perched on his spade, or fork, or sat in a nearby shrub, eagerly waiting to pounce on whatever goodies might be disturbed by their efforts.

When I’m not sculpting, I spend a great deal of time walking and hiking. Whether I am high up, on wild and desolate Dartmoor, traversing precipitous cliffs, along the Devon Coast path, or deep, deep,  in the green lanes of Devon and Dorset, there is always a robin nearby keeping me company!
