Description

Tawny Owls nest every year in the trees behind our house, and their compact, powerful, silhouette is a common sight, gliding silently over our garden at dusk. There’s nothing nicer than drifting off to sleep with the gentle hooting of Tawny Owls drifting in through the bedroom windows.

During the daylight hours Tawny Owls usually perch close to the trunks of large trees, in heavy cover and are difficult to spot, because of their superb camouflage. However, they are frequently mobbed by smaller birds, alarmed at having a large bird of prey, ‘on their doorstep’ (which is an excellent clue to their secret hiding places, if you look out for it).

My sleepy old owl is depicted perched in it’s favourite oak tree, keeping one eye half open for just such annoying visitors. Though I must also admit, there is more than a little inspiration from the character of “Old Brown” in one of my favourite childhood books – “The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin” by Beatrix Potter.

This bronze was my late mother’s favourite piece.
