Description
The massive Red Deer stag, dubbed the “Emperor of Exmoor” by the British press, made headlines around the world when he was tragically shot dead by an unknown hunter. Regarded as the largest Red Deer stag in Britain, he was a truly monumental and magnificent animal. I sculpted this bronze portrait of the Emperor as a tribute and a memorial to his memory.

The Red Deer is Britain’s largest surviving native wild animal. A mature Red Deer stag is an imposing beast and the population of Red Deer living in the South West of Britain are the largest in Britain, with the Emperor of Exmoor counted as the largest stag of them all. Killed in his prime, his needless shooting was a tragic loss, which moved me deeply. I love to see Red Deer whilst out in the field and the bellowing roars of Red Deer stags, echoing over the misty hills and moors of Dartmoor and Exmoor during the rutting season, once heard, is never forgotten!
My bronze portrait of the Emperor was based on copious photographs of him, taken while he was still alive, supplemented by additional measurements and reference from other large Red Deer stags.
